How to Come up with Great Dissertation Ideas

Coming up with great dissertation ideas is of critical importance in the dissertation module. This article has been published to act as a guide on how to come up with a great dissertation topic title for a quality dissertation paper.

Importance of Unique Dissertation Ideas

Dissertation writing is arguably the most important part of any degree, whether it is a Masters or an Undergraduate program. The dissertation module heavily contributes to the final degree score. And the most important element within this module is, of course, coming up with quality dissertation ideas

Once you have quality ideas, you can build a strong foundation for the follow-up quality dissertation topic title, dissertation proposal and the final dissertation paper. Therefore, it would not be wrong to state here that the journey of drafting a quality dissertation paper starts with coming with some quality research ideas.

Starting the Process

The process of exploring good dissertation ideas starts by going within, that is to say, that you need to ask your self the questions; What is that I want to research/focus on? What are my academic interests? What would I love working on? Is there any particular field of study or research that inspires me?

The process of asking yourself these questions and exploring the answers will help you come up with research subjects that fascinate you the most. Once you get clear on what you want, the next stage becomes easier. However, if you are not sure of where your research interests lie, then, unfortunately, you would not be able to move ahead with confidence and you will feel confused all along the journey.

Listing the Dissertation Ideas

The next stage of the process is to explore more research ideas and interests that inspire you the most. The best way to go about it is to list down the interest you have come up with and Google these ideas. It does not matter what your ideas are, simply search the keywords online and explore what comes up. Pay particular focus on any research papers that come up, the book titles, and note down the references resources on any articles that you see on the search results.

At this stage, you can create a new document and start writing down the dissertation ideas that you find most interesting, and save the file a ‘tentative draft’. Continue the writing process until you have at least 5+ tentative research ideas in your list, and if possible, review the ideas you have noted down and mature these further.

The Filtering Process

The next stage would then be to shortlist or filer some of the ideas you have listed in your tentative research ideas file. The best method to do this is to filter the ideas that are way too challenging. The most challenging ideas would be the ones with the least number of research articles, i.e. you would not be able to find many quality reference resources against these ideas.

The important point to note here is that you will not be able to work with a topic title that is way more difficult than you can manage, so there is no need to be extra courageous at this stage. Bring the number of ideas in your list down to 3 at maximum, and call it a day!

The Creativity Process

Once you have brought down the list to around 3, its time to get creative and ask yourself; How can you add value to these dissertation ideas? What new inspiration or outcome can come of these ideas? How can these ideas help the world around me?

Explore the answers and edit the listed ideas and mature them. Write down these ideas in an academic format and discuss the same with your supervisor.  Note down their suggestions and edit them further to get the best custom dissertation ideas!
